religious places in kolkata

More than enough religious places are present in Kolkata. However, readers should remember that the religious tour of Kolkata metropolis involves a variety of temples, churches, and the like.

Listed below are a few of Kolkata’s well-known places of worship.

1-Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata: Most venerated religious place in Kolkata!

Bound by the river Hooghly in Kolkata, the Kalighat Kali Temple is exclusively set aside for the worship of Goddess Kali. The goddess is regarded as both the destroyer as well as the savior.

It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas as the right toe of Dakshayani Sati is said to have dropped on the ground here. The Shakti here is widely known as Dakshina Kalika, while the Bhairava is identified as Nakulesh.

Revered as a divine Hindu Shakta meeting point, crowds of Shiva and Durga/Kali/Shakti believers visit this temple each day. But despite that, Tuesdays and Saturdays are exceptionally crowded as worshippers these days to be extremely auspicious.

The Vipad Tarini Vrat day at Kalighat is considered to be the most auspicious day in the Kalighat temple when the goddess is prayed to as Ratantika and Falaaharini Kali.

2-Dakshineshwar Temple: West-Bengal’s world-famous Kali temple!

One more legendary Kali temple is the Dakshineswar Kali Templ, next to the Hoogly river. This Hindu Navaratna temple, built by Rani Rashmoni and situated at Dakshineswar, is made up of twelve Shiva temples, one temple of Radhakrishna, and one principal temple of Goddess Kali.

In this temple, Goddess Kali is glorified in the form of Bhavatarini (a deity who sets her devotees free from the ocean of existence i.e., Samsara'.)

The Dakshineshwar temple is also renowned for its connection with Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, a prominent mystic of 19th Century Bengal.

Also, Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maa Sarada spent a significant portion of their lives in 'Nahabat,' a large room in the north-western section, past the last of the Shiva temples.

3-Saint Pauls Cathedral: An iconic church of Kolkata!

St. Pauls Cathedral is a much-publicized religious place in Kolkata. Placed at the southern border of the Maidan, Saint Pauls Cathedral was constructed from 1839-1847.

The original Episcopal Church of the Orient, the Saint Pauls Cathedral, is earmarked for St. Paul. Bishop Wilson is believed to have supported the establishment of this stunning house of worship in 1839.

However, one must pay tribute to Major W.N. Forbes for the breath-taking Indo-Gothic building style of Kolkata’s St. Paul's Cathedral.

When St. Paul Cathedral of Kolkata, was damaged by the earthquake of 1934, its tower fell. After a while, it was reconstructed to make one think of the Bell Harry Tower of Canterbury Cathedral.

With a linear measure of 247 ft and 81 ft. in broadness, the most prestigious hall of the cathedral is of considerable size. Its eastern walls are wrapped up entirely with overwhelmingly impressive artwork.

4-Magen David Synagogue: One of the oldest religious places in Kolkata!

The outstanding Magen David Synagogue on Jewish Synagogue Street was started by Elias David Joseph Ezra, as a homage to his dear father. This well-lit by gas, synagogue in Kolkata, offers a superb view of this city.

5-Novel and unusual religious places in Kolkata!

a-The Belur Math (on the western bank of River Hooghly in the Howrah district of West-Bengal) with religious fraternity as the foundation (as was championed by Ramakrishna Paramhansa)

b-The world's first technically-enabled 'Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Museum' at Baghbazar, constructed to take care of particulars associated with the revered saint.

Health benefits of spirituality in one’s daily life!

Regardless of the routine, religious or solemn ceremonies, or the site of worship, the belief in and worship of a controlling power can have a meaningful impact on an individual’s life.

A few health benefits linked with religious or spiritual activities are as follows:

1-Greater life-expectancy

For example, the higher life span of individuals who are spiritual or religious compared with people, indifferent, or hostile to religion.

2-Enriched state of mind

Spirituality can contribute to close-knit family relationships and friendships. On top of that, it can make it easier for people to deal effectively with bodily pain, heart-rending experiences, and so on.

3-Builds a robust immune system!

Stress can cause a large amount of damage or harm to the immune system. Spirituality can supply a feeling of being comfortable, healthy, or happy and inundate the brain with immunity-enhancing hormones.

4-Lessening the danger of disease! The mental or emotional strain is often related to high blood pressure. If not controlled, it can result in a large number of life-changing or unfortunate incidents like heart ailments, kidney disorder, or stroke. However, positive emotions connected with spirituality can tone down stress levels and blood pressure.
